Biomarkers in Peripheral Vascular Surgery
We read with great interest the article by Whittaker et al. in the Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia.1 In this elegant observational study, the authors assessed the influence of perioperative serum magnesium and related electrolytes on cardiac and noncardiac morbidity and mortality in emergency peripheral vascular surgery.1 They found that postoperative magnesium was independently predictive for 30-day mortality and cardiac morbidity.

I welcome the interest of Dr. Gu and Dr. Liu in our systematic review. In their comment, Gu and Liu suggest that the inclusion of the study performed by Hamid et al would likely reveal a significant finding for the effect of systemic magnesium to reduce postoperative arrhythmias after cardiopulmonary bypass surgery. The study of Hamid et al was not originally included in our meta-analysis since it was not revealed by the systematic search, and none of the included studies cited that study. Effect of almond consumption on vascular function in patients with coronary artery disease: a randomized, controlled, cross-over trial

Hemocompatibility of plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) coated Mg-RE and Mg-Zn-Ca alloys for vascular scaffold applications
In conclusion, a new parallel plate flow chamber design simulating blood-circulation was successfully established, enabling the further assessment of platelet adhesion on bioabsorbable materials under dynamic flow conditions. Static and dynamic experiments showed, that plasma-electrolytically treated specimens showed low thrombocyte adhesion on both alloys, proposing their potential use in vascular scaffolds. The uncoated magnesium alloys showed rapid degradation along with gas formation due to the chemically active surface and therefore give concern regarding their safety and suitability for vascular applications.Graphical abstract

Purpose of review Vascular calcification is a major contributor to increased cardiovascular mortality in chronic kidney disease (CKD). Recently, calciprotein particles (CPP) were identified to drive the calcification process. CPP may explain the effects of high phosphate on vascular calcification. Magnesium is a promising novel therapeutic approach to halt vascular calcification, because it inhibits CPP maturation and is associated with reduced cardiovascular mortality in CKD. Interventions To Attenuate Vascular Calcification Progression in Chronic Kidney Disease: A Systematic Review of Clinical Trials
Conclusions Currently, there are insufficient or conflicting data regarding interventions evaluated in clinical trials for mitigation of vascular calcification in people with CKD. Therapy involving magnesium or sodium thiosulfate appears most promising, but evaluable studies were small and of short duration.
